DAVAO ARTISTIC, CULTURAL and HISTORICAL HERITAGE

Davao was created as a city when Assemblyman Romualdo C. Quimpo of Davao sponsored a bill in Congress in March 16, 1936, making Davao a chartered city.  The said bill was signed into law by President Manuel L. Quezon on October 16, 1936.  The formal inauguration was held on March 1, 1937.

But before that Davao was known to be the melting pot of cultures.  The traditions, the history, the socio-economic, demographic surroundings that makes Davao so unique compared to other places here in the Philippines.  Consist of 10 tribes and soon to be 11 tribes:

  1. CLATA(BAGOBO TRIBES)
  2. MAGUINDANAON
  3. OVU MANOVO
  4. MATIGSALUG
  5. ATA
  6. KAGAN
  7. TAGABAWA
  8. TAUSOG
  9. MARANAO
  10. SAMA
  11. the new tribe: IRA-NUN
Though diverse in different cultures and beliefs they have one thing in common:  They offer thanksgiving, dancing and singing for the bountiful blessings they called it PAHIDUNGOG.

They are also RICH in their ARTS & CRAFTS.  Very beautiful and artistry made.  So elegant that even today's generation can appreciate their works.

Preserved works of arts from our TRIBES.  Restore their traditions and cultures for the next generation to see and admire , though we are sweep from the urbanization.  It is proper for all DABAWENYOS, natives or migrants, to be proud of Davao City as one of the fastest growing cities in the Philippines.

FACTS ABOUT KADAYAWAN

Do you know that the Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival originated from the tradition of thanksgiving among the indigenous communities called PAHINUNGOD.

MAYOR ELIAS B. LOPEZ

In 1970's, Mayor ELIAS B. LOPEZ, a Bagobo, initiated feasts in the poblacion with representatives from different ethno-linguistic groups TAGABAWA, CLATA, ATA, MANOBO, MANSAKA, MANDAYA and the ISLAMIZED Indigenous Communities.

The first title of the feast "KADAYAWAN SA DABAW" was "APO DUWALING" Festival.  This is DAVAO known for:

MT.APO, DURIAN and WALING-WALING

In 1988, "APO DUWALING" later change to KADAYAWAN SA DABAW which Dabawnon expression for anything is good, excellent and brings great fortune.  "Dayaw"-good, "Madayaw"-blissful.

WHICH OF THE LOGO'S DO YOU THINK CAPTURES THE ESSENCE OF KADAYAWAN SA DABAW FESTIVAL?

1990's up to 2007

2008 to 2010

2011 to present

In year 2005-2010 Kadayawan was revered(admired) as the FESTIVAL OF FESTIVALS.  WHY?  Because this is the only City in the Philippines that celebrates many FESTIVALS in one.
  1. Mindanao Indigenous Dance Festival,
  2. World Music Festival(Tugtog;or better known now as TUNOG MINDANAW),
  3. Indigenous Music Festival(Agongan or Kulintangan),
  4. Indigenous People's Festival,
  5. Dive Festival.
But in the year 2011, Tagline was change to KING OF PHILIPPINE FESTIVALS.

About HIYAS SA KADAYAWAN it was originally a model search conceptualized for a fashion industry of Davao City. In 2007 it was changed to a competing young, indigenous ladies who are more knowledgeable of the culture and history of their tribes.

The First Model Hiyas 1997 was MARIE ROSE CADORNA ESCALADA.

The First Indigenous Hiyas 2007 was SAMRAH NUH, a Kagan.

By the way, Kadayawan Theme song was composed by JOEY AYALA, a 2000 DATU BAGO AWARDEE.

Additional information was given to me, IRANUN TRIBES will be added to the 10 Tribes of Davao City.

Brief discuss about Ira-nun, they settled here in Davao year 1910.

So our celebration for KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL 2013 will be,

"11 TRIBES, 1 VIBE".

A team composed of representatives from the national and local governments conducts the evaluation, while results are being validated by civil society organizations to maintain impartiality, he said.
